During a reunion of the Committee in Istanbul, Cracow has been chosen as the host city of the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee.

The commitee consists of 21 members and it organizes a gathering at least once a year. It is responsible for the creation of the World Heritage List, as well as for the planification of the use of the World Heritage Fund. A member´s term of office lasts 6 years.

In Poland there are 14 places registered on the UNESCO List, amongst which since 1978 you can find Cracow´s Historic Centre. The arguments in favour of the choice of this city as the place of the next reunion were: the central location of the city, an airport with good connections in various directions and a modern congress centre (ICE Kraków Congress Centre). In this competition Poland managed to beat Vietnam.

Given that the session in Istambul was shortened due to the unsuccessful coup d'etat in Turkey, the agreement between Polish Government and UNESCO will be signed in Paris in October. Then, the Professor Jacek Purchla, creator and director of the International Culture Centre in Cracow, will assume the function of the president of the World Heritage Commitee.
